The visa waiver agreement was jointly signed by Tongan Prime Minister 'Akilisi Pohiva and the Chinese Ambassador to the kingdom, Huang Huaguang last June.
A spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy says the Mutual Visa Exemption Agreement for Ordinary Passport Holders will be effective on 19 August.
Citizens from China and Tonga will be exempted from visa requirement for entry into, from or transit through the territory of the other for a period of stay not exceeding 30 days.
