The letter was handed over to the Prime Minister of Tonga, Rev Dr Pōhiva Tuʻiʻonetoa, at an event today Wednesday 9 June.

“This support will help the Government of Tonga respond to specific economic and social impacts of COVID-19, such as, providing financial support and social protection for businesses and households that have experienced economic hardship as a result of the pandemic. It will also assist with the Government of Tonga’s repatriation efforts,” said High Commissioner Babington.

“Education is so vital to the success of Pacific people that it’s truly fitting that a number of educators have been honoured this year. Education provides an opportunity for Pacific people to realise their potential and to be confident, thriving and resilient in Aotearoa New Zealand.

“As we embark on this year’s Pacific language weeks it’s fitting that Mr Siale Faitotunu who was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his work with the Tongan Community and the Tongan language in Christchurch.

Eight years ago, New Zealand offered to resettle 150 refugees a year from Australia's offshore detention system.

Williams is urging Morrison to finally accept the offer.

"I think 250 people or close to, have been left in Papua New Guinea and in Nauru that can be brought to have a better life.

"They've been stuck for the last eight years. We can't even do it for two weeks in quarantine, imagine doing it for eight years."

He told Morning Report that New Zealand needed to understand the meaning of refugees.

A post-mortem was completed and Police said they are continuing to make a number of enquiries to establish the circumstances surrounding his death, including speaking to several people in Beatty Street and the wider Ōtāhuhu area.

Police said they have also received a number of calls from members of the public since their appeal for information and want to thank those who came forward with information.

This information is being assessed as part of ongoing enquiries.

Fuifuikula ‘O Lofakaitamaki ‘Ealelei’s passed away over a week ago.

Ealelei’s co-workers attempted to wake him up on Sunday May 16 at 12pm before they discovered he was dead, RSE Liaison Officer in New Zealand Sefita Hao’uli told Kaniva News.

‘Ealelei died at the Mr Apple Tongan RSE worker’s accommodation at Williams St, Hastings.

The 26-year-old man is survived by his wife and their two children.

Fuifuikula 'O Lofakaitamaki 'Ealelei is reported to have died of a suspected heart attack while he was asleep.

RSE Liaison Officer in New Zealand, Sefita Hao'uli, told Kaniva News that his co-workers attempted to wake him up on Sunday (May 16) before they realised he was dead.

'Ealelei died at the Mr Apple Tongan RSE worker's accommodation in Hastings.

His family are now working with Tongan and New Zealand authorities to take his body back home to Tonga.

The young father is survived by his wife and their two children.

The government has revealed the direct cost of the vaccination for the first time, which will be spread over two years.

Nearly a billion dollars has been set aside for the vaccines themselves, as well as the specialist equipment needed to deliver them.

That includes vaccines the country has not got yet - and may never use - but New Zealand has advanced purchase agreements.

The minister said it had purchased enough to support the Pacific roll-out and any leftovers can be used later.

Police and emergency services attended the scene.

“Watching first-time parents gain that confidence, because you’re there from when the baby is literally newborn ‘til they’re about four. 

"So you just see that transition from being the nervous mum that’s paranoid about everything to becoming this confident mum that’s just enjoying her baby and enjoying being a mum.”

She said working alongside families and supporting their in their values and beliefs while raising their children has been a "real eye opener".
