Major setback for Tonga ahead of Kangaroos test

He received the injury in Hull FC's UK Super League last-round loss to St Helens only days after coach Kristian Woolf named his initial 29-strong squad.

The 31-year-old back-rower has amassed 11 Tests for the Mate Ma'a since switching his allegiance from New Zealand in 2013.

But the former Melbourne and Penrith NRL forward will miss Tonga's first Test against the Kangaroos in Auckland on October 20th.

"Sika is the latest member of our squad to be ruled out for the remainder of the season and it's gutting for us," Hull FC coach Lee Radford said.

NRL anti-violence program expands into Tonga

The NRL visited Tonga at the start of September to address the Tongan Government and a number of local organisations who are eager to support the NRL in delivering the anti-violence model.

Those organisations include; Families Free Of Violence (FFOV), Legal Aid, Women's Crisis Centre (WCC), Ma'a Fafine Mo E Famili (For women and families), Tonga National Centre for Women and Children (TNCWC), TALIFA and Ministry of Internal Affairs – Women's Division ( MIA).

Mum pleads not guilty to helping husband rape 14-year-old daughter

The victims were 14 and 16 years’ old when the alleged crimes were committed against them.

The man faces 15 counts of charges of rape, sexual violations and indecent assaults.

His wife, the victims’ mother, also appeared in court after prosecutors said she assisted her husband while he was allegedly raping her daughter in their home.

The woman’s two children are from a previous marriage.

None of the parties can be named for legal reasons.

Three men escape serious injuries in Vava’u crash

Neiafu town officer Vava Lapota alleged alcohol and speed were suspected to have contributed to the crash.

Despite the power pole being cut into half by the impact, the three men inside all managed to escape without any serious injuries, Lapota said.

Lapota said the car was heading northbound when the crash occurred.

Kaniva News reports only one car was involved in the crash.

     

Tongan drug cultivator spared jail because his wife is sick

Mikaele Tukia’s offending came to light after police broke into his Nualei home on 12 August 2017 after receiving tip off from the public.

Further searches around the property found a basket inside Tukia’s house which contained marijuana leaves.

Justice Cato told Tukia that his offending carries a maximum of 25 years or TOP$750,000 or both, Taimi ‘O Tonga newspaper has reported.

Mr Cato sentenced Tukia to three years and ordered to pay a fine of $1,000.

3 Asians jailed for smuggling main methamphetamine ingredients into Tonga

Kevin Liu, 31, was jailed for 5 years and eight months, Shigin Lin, 32, was jailed for 5 years and 4 months while Xiu Ming Liu, 41, was jailed for 10 months for their involvement in smuggling of the illicit drugs, Taimi ‘O Tonga newspaper has reported.

This amount of pseudoephedrine had the potential to yield up to 442 grams or 663 grams of methamphetamine with a street value of around NZ$126,000 or NZ$355,000.

The trio were arrested after Customs intercepted a shipping container from New Zealand and packages sent from China, the paper reported.

Tonga engineers re-certified

Roan Gouws and Minandi von Ludwig, training facilitators are Directors of KN Training & Development and are in Tonga for the second visit. 

A total of 16 participants including 13 from Digicel and 3 from the Ministry of Infrastructure took part in the training. 

The training was both in classroom setting and field exercises and provided the participants with re-certification on two major components.

Digicel SMS game winner named

Tu’akalau took home $1200TOP in prizes.

She said it was tough game compared to previous ones as she was ranked 2nd in the last five days of the game in August.

She added that it was a struggle to reach number 1.

Tu’akalau thanked Digicel for creating such platforms for its customers to entertain themselves.

Royal couple on two-day visit to Tonga in Oct

The newlyweds will head to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Tonga in October.

The trip, lasting just over two weeks, will centre around the Invictus Games Sydney 2018, the Paralympics-style sports event for wounded, sick and injured service personnel.

More than 500 veterans from 18 nations will compete in 11 sports from October 20 to 27 and the couple will attend several of the events.

Harry and Meghan have only briefly visited Dublin since they married in May with the rest of their engagements all in the UK. 

     

Tonga still wants Forum Leaders to champion Pacific war on junk food

He's told the Forum partners dialogue with business leaders that participating Forum Leaders can be weighed on a regular basis, with the winner being the person who loses the most weight and those leaders who have not lost or have gained weight also being awarded a prize - they will get bicycles.

Samoa's Prime Minister Tuilaepa responded in kind to the weight loss challenge from Tonga's Prime Minister, welcoming it but noting his colleague would win it all the time - and that the challenge needed to consider those like Nauru's President who were made of muscle.
