Special public holiday to celebrate Tonga’s historic win

The Government of Tonga has declared Friday a public holiday to celebrate Tonga Invitational XIII rugby league team’s remarkable achievement at the recent Oceania Cup.

A statement from the Prime Minister’s office said the special public holiday is in recognition of the outstanding and historical achievement made by the Tonga Invitational XIII Rugby League Team against Great Britain Lions and Australian Kangaroos,

Last Friday Cabinet had approved that Friday, 15 November 2019 shall be declared a Special Public Holiday to the entirety of the Kingdom of Tonga.

“This is to celebrate the achievement, outstanding performance and the talents gifted to Tongan players by the Government of Tonga,” the statement said.

Tonga sealed a historic 16-12 upset over the world champion Australia and overpowered Great Britain 14-6 at the Oceania Cup.
