New Zealand are coming off a 29-20 loss to Ireland last weekend where they were, by their own admission, outplayed in most departments, and are looking to avoid back-to-back defeats for the second time in 12 months.

"We've had a really good week. Hopefully that means we show up on Sunday," Whitelock said.

"They (France) are a smart side and they will stick to their strengths, but at the same time they will have looked at the last four or five games we have played and come up with a plan.

The 29-year-old former All Black on Friday announced he was finishing up in the sport after continued discomfort from an ankle injury.

“It has been a massive year and it is time to hang up the boots,” he said in a statement released by the Chiefs.

“After playing 10 years of footy, my ankle has had enough, and it is time to move onto something new.

“It has been a really hard decision, but at the end of the day, my body and my family come first.

Cane, who has spent most of the season out with injury, returns to the loose forward trio that includes the introduction of Akira Ioane, who is on the blindside and Ardie Savea at number eight.

There are four changes in the backs from the side that lost to Ireland, with Aaron Smith starting at halfback, Richie Mo'unga at first-five the injured Beauden Barrett, Quinn Tupaea at centre for the injured Anton Lienert-Brown and George Bridge coming onto the left wing.

Ireland scored three tries to the All Blacks two and kicked several penalties to secure the nine point win.

Ireland's New Zealand born wing James Lowe scored the first try of the test, while hooker Codie Taylor, who was yellow carded in the first half, and wing Will Jordan scored tries for the All Blacks.

It's the All Blacks first loss of their Northern Tour.

Ireland dominated most aspects from start to finish with another superb performance against the All Blacks.

Ireland have won two of their last four tests against the All Blacks since breaking their 111-year drought in 2016 and Whitelock said it was a contest New Zealand looked forward to.

"This week is massive. If you look back over the last five or six times we've played Ireland, they are big games and big occasions," Whitelock told reporters.

"Especially here (in Dublin), it's an amazing atmosphere that is hard to describe.

Winger Sevu Reece is the only player retained from last week's scrappy win over Italy as the selectors named a team close to that which featured in the previous week's 54-16 thumping of Wales.

Among the backs from the Welsh test, Rieko Ioane is moved from the wing to midfield to partner Anton Lienert-Brown and replace David Havili, who drops to the bench as Reece moves over to the left after starting on the right in Rome.

Smith was expected to miss the entire season-ending northern hemisphere tour to stay home with family after the birth of his second son Leo but could line up in the final two tests against the Irish and France.

"It all happened very quickly and now I'm two hours from jumping on the plane to join the boys in Ireland," Smith said in a video posted on the All Blacks' social media account on Tuesday.

"I've very excited to come back and join the boys ... Two very big games for the lads, which is really exciting to be part of.

Despite the eventual scoreline seeing them rack up seven tries at the Stadio Olimpico, the All Blacks were out of sorts and need to improve for future matches.

Coach Ian Foster has named what is essentially his second string lineup with Cane and hooker Dane Coles in the starting lineup as they continue their return to the game following injuries.

The squad sees the young locking partnership of Tupou Vaa'i and Josh Lord named to start in the second row. It will be 21-year-old Vaa'i's fourth start in his 10th Test while 20-year-old Lord gets his first Test start after making his debut against the USA in the first Test of the Northern Tour.
