Fake FB accounts target Fiji Reserve Bank

FBC News says according to the Bank, cyber criminals have created several fake facebook profiles of Barry Whiteside, the Bank Governor.

However, the Governor does not have a Facebook profile under his name.

The Bank said impersonations were used to provide fake RBF approvals for victims to remit funds to secure proceeds for fake lotteries, investments and loans.

Governor Whiteside said RBF and its staff do not communicate with anyone via Facebook or other social media on official business matters.

Team manager Toa Kaufusi said they brought 18 players with them to play against the Fiji residents and to also tour Hawaii for their game against the Toa Samoa, but the two players might not make it.

Kaufusi said there were some difficulties faced in the interview and they were trying to work on re-applying for the duo's visa.

But today as they face the Fiji residents, Kaufusi said the Tongan side was made up of local players and none have had the experience of playing in International competitions just like the Fiji Residents.

Golden performance by Fiji in sevens final

RNZ reports the World Series champions beat Great Britain 43-7 in a dominant performance at the Rio Games.

Fiji led Great Britain 29 to nil at half time and never looked like losing after that.

Fiji beat Japan 20-5 in the semi-final to make the final against Great Britain and guarantee the country its first ever Olympic medal.

Fiji to battle Team GB for gold medal

The Flying Fijians, the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series champions for the last two years, battled past Japan 20-5 in the first semi-final with Josua Tuisova among their try-scorers.

Fiji beat NZ to reach Olympic 7s semis

RNZ reports the World Series champions opened the scoring with a try to skipper Osea Kolinisau in the second minute of the match in wet conditions at the Deodoro Stadium.

Rieko Ioane was sent to the sin bin midway through the first half for what was deemed a dangerous spear tackle but the All Blacks Sevens still managed to find the tryline through Gilles Kaka and led 7-5 at the interval.

Fiji regained the lead with a try to Jerry Tuwai shortly after halftime and Osea Kolinisau converted to make it 12-7.

South China Sea ruling puts Minerva Reef under scrutiny

The reef which lies between Tonga and Fiji is claimed by both countries and has been the cause of tension after Tonga's navigational beacons were destroyed by the Fijians about five years ago.

An International Law of the Sea specialist Donald Rothwell said that in the South China Sea decision, the Permanent Court of Arbitration laid down the characteristics for deciding the status of various land formations.

He said it meant the inherent worth of the Minerva Reef was now quite different.

Pacific Islands battle, Fiji to take on Tonga

Fiji Bati assistant coach Jo Rabele said they were concentrating on a game plan which the local players needed to use after consultation with head coach and Australian-based Michael Potter.

"The teams had been selected from our inter-zone competitions and they had gone through fitness tests. We selected the best players and I am trying to blend the boys together to build a better combination," he said.                    

"We are working on a game plan which we will use against Tonga during the match before going to Hawaii for the tournament."

Fiji's new SODELPA leader gives fresh coup apology

Sitiveni Rabuka's appointment was confirmed during Friday's annual party meeting in Suva.

Mr Rabuka led two coups in 1987 before becoming prime minister in 1992 and holding that role until losing the 1999 election.

He said his first action as leader was to give an official and traditional apology for the injuries of 1987.
