Tongan youth leaders hold local board to account on crime hike

Late last month, the trust took matters into their own hands and sat down with the Māngere-Ōtāhuhu Local Board to ask them what they could do to help reduce crime.

Simulata Pope has been involved with the To'utupu or Tonga Youth Trust all her life.

Her biggest frustration was with elected officials, who are nowhere to be seen when their young constituents asked for help.

"We vote these community leaders in. We vote all these adults in and the only time we see them are during elections," she said.

NZ-based Tonga church hosts pop-up Covid-19 testing station

PMN News reports the testing site at the Lotofale'ia Mangere Tongan Methodist Church was available from 9am until 6pm.

Superintendent of the Vahefonua Tonga o Aotearoa, Tevita Finau, said he wanted his church to host a testing station "for accessibility, for people in the area to be able to go somewhere they're familiar with".  ​​

He also believes with Pacific people being the most affected in this second outbreak, they need to take advantage of the free testing available.

Police appeal for information over killing of Tongan mum in Mangere

Acting Detective Inspector Shaun Vickers says the investigation so far indicates the wider community is not at risk.  

“We believe the Calthorp Close property has been specifically targeted because of people known to frequent the address."

A team of detectives has been working on Operation Truro with community-based police staff.

Today, members of the Mangere Neighbourhood Policing Team helped with pamphlet drops in the area.

“We have heard from a number people in the area, but we still need any witnesses or people with information to contact us.

House where Tongan woman was fatally shot, defaced by gang graffiti

A 54-year-old woman was charged with intentional damage related to the tagging.

The latest victim was Meliame Fisi’ihoi, 57, who was killed on Wednesday at Calthorp Close, Favona property, in the early hours of the morning.

Last month, a man was seriously injured on the same property in Favona.

On Sunday, graffiti including the words “Aroha Black Power” was painted white on a black hangar next to the house.

Mangere man William Soane wanted by New Zealand Police

Soane is 20-year-old and is actively avoiding Police.

Kaniva News reports he has ‘Tonga’ tattooed on the outside of his right calf.

Any sightings of Soane should be reported to Police immediately and he should not be approached.

Information on Soane’s current whereabouts can be shared with Constable Daniel Ross of the Glen Innes Criminal Investigation Branch on 04 212 3534.

Funeral service to be held for baby found in Māngere

Police will release the baby's body to local community leaders for a funeral service and burial at Māngere Lawn Cemetery on Saturday.

Māngere-Ōtāhuhu Local Board member, Nick Bakulich, says Baby Mona will get a proper send off thanks to the overwhelming response from businesses and locals.

"We've already had quite a few inquiries from a number of funeral services who've wanted to offer their services for free," he says. "We've also had people who have wanted to contribute in terms of the burial cost."

Car crashes into fence outside Tongan church in South Auckland

Some church members of the Free Wesleyan church were examining the crash when Kaniva News took photos at the scene.

It was not immediately clear if there were any injuries and when the crash happened.
