Tongatapu man arrested on suspicion of arson, theft of TOP$75,000 from Tonga Post office

Police reported that on the night of 3 July 2021, TOP$75,121.55 cash was removed from the Tonga Post’s Chief Executive’s office before the building was set ablaze.

Kaniva News reports a Police investigation found fingerprints at the crime scene which helped investigators identified the suspect.

The 35-year-old man was arrested and is being remanded in police custody until 30 May 2022, Police said.

The incident occurred four days after the body of Tonga’s First Lady, Neomai Tu’itupou Pohiva was buried on 19 December.

According to Kaniva News, PM Pohiva’s daughter ‘Ana Koli Fifita said the family had decided not to lodge a complaint with the Police.

She said if such robbery had happened while her mother was still alive Neomai would not complain, implying she was a woman who had a great sense of patience.

Fifita said she regretted this kind of disrespectful behaviour.

Thieves inflict first loss of the season on the NZ Warriors

Sunday night's Ed Sheeran concert at Mt Smart prevented Warriors staff from gaining access to the club's headquarters to store playing gear and other equipment, including GPS trackers and game jerseys, after returning from Canberra.

They were forced to temporarily stash it away in an unmarked van outside a staff member's home on Auckland's North Shore, where it was pillaged overnight.

Warriors CEO Cameron George said they were "devastated" by the turn of events.

Tsunami alert siren thief arrested

Police said the suspect was arrested in Lapaha on Friday night September 15.

Three sirens were stolen but only one was recovered. The sirens are part of a civil defence warning system that alerts the public to impending natural disasters such as tsunami.

Local media report the three sirens were installed 25m high up on the pole by the National Emergency Management Office. The siren recovered was found near the Liahona area.

Police are seeking the two other missing sirens.

     

Nadene Lomu reveals theft from Jonah Lomu's grave

In an emotional Facebook post, Lomu said "it saddens me that our sons things they choose for you keep being taken off & taken away from yr place of rest".

She said "a child's love is innocent & pure", and said the removal of the tokens from the grave of the legendary All Black rugby player had hurt her two sons.
