Fiji PM Rabuka discusses bilateral relations with Cook Islands counterpart

The two leaders during their first meeting, discussed key areas of cooperation to further advance Fiji and Cook Island’s bilateral relations.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Rabuka emphasized that Fiji places great importance on its relations with the Cook Islands as Pacific Island Developing States and stewards of large maritime spaces.

He adds that the bilateral relations have grown over the years, through collective participation and advocacy in regional and at international forums.

During his visit, McDonald had the honour to meet with key partners including Crown Prince Tupouto’a ‘Ulukalala, Hu’akavameiliku, Prime Minister of Tonga, Samiu Vaipulu, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Justice, Fekitamoeloa ‘Utoikamanu, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Tourism, Tiofilusi Tiueti, Minister for Finance, and Lord Speaker, Lord Fakafanua.

After welcoming the PM then introduced Crown Prince Tupouto'a 'Ulukalala before an official photo shoot in front of the giant Tongan Coat of Arms at the Cabinet Chambers' foyer.

The bilateral that followed discussed the strengthening of ties between the two countries, development assistance and trade opportunities.

It also gave the opportunity for PM Hu'akavameiliku to thank Hon and her delegation for New Zealand's continued assistance to Tonga, especially in the last six months, since the January 15 Hunga-Tonga-Hunga- Ha'apai volcano and tsunami on January 15, 2022.
