Humanitarian assistance

Digicel provides more humanitarian aid to families in cyclone-hit Tongatapu

This week, a team visited Maamaloa Side School, Tonga Side School, St. Francis Catholic School, GPS Nuku’alofa and GPS Fasi in the central area of Tongatapu.

School stationery and bottled Fiji Water were supplied to all five schools.

The Digicel team visited 34 homes of children with special needs from the Mango Tree Centre and provided them with food boxes and water today.

Some homes have been completely destroyed and the occupants were given tents and relief aid to assist them.

Transparency trumps speed in Tonga relief effort

A convoy of eight trucks manned with Emergency Management personnel, military, National Youth Congress members and Caritas aid agency staff wove its way to the north-eastern districts of Tongatapu on Friday.

Half of the villages that needed assistance were still waiting, and Emergency Management Office Director Leveni 'Aho had already expressed concern about the speed of the distribution.

But transparency trumps speed in the process at the moment.
