Funding problems an issue for Tongan 7s team

Tonga will contest the World Series core-team qualifier in Hong Kong at the start of March, where a permanent spot on the global circuit is up for grabs.

Then in June they will compete in the final Olympic sevens qualifier in Monaco.

Heilala Charity donates towards elderly and disabled

The container was given to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, who then coordinated its distribution to different organisations including the Ministry of Health, National Retirement Fund Office and the MIA’s Social Protection and Disabilities Division.

Included in the donated items were clothes, office chairs and others.

The Social Protection team will work on the distribution of this later on in the week. 

MPs await court judgements

The trial in Vava’u, which concluded in December last year was adjourned for the judgement to be delivered sometime this month by Chief Justice O. G. Paulsen.

The election petition filed against Lavulavu by Viliami Latu alleged corruption and bribery during his 2014 General Election campaign, which Lavulavu denied.

Meanwhile, Mateni Tapueluelu Tongatapu No. 4 People’s Representative to Parliament has lodged an appeal, to be decided by the Appeal Court in March or April this year.

PM Pohiva calls for commitment and better service

Speaking at the Civil Service Annual Church Service at the Queen Salote Memorial Hall on Tuesday, PM Pohiva reminded leaders in government of their calling and the importance of serving with commitment, honesty and transparency.

The service was attended by Cabinet Ministers, Chief Executive Officers, Directors, senior civil servants and members of the civil service.

Gun fired during Fasi armed robbery, Police search for two suspects

The suspects managed to escape with about TP$200 last Saturday.

No one was injured and Police have pleaded for public help to find the suspects.

The two men, who disguised their faces, entered the shop at Salote Road.

Men charged in Tonga for forging passports

Matangi Tonga reports Gungchang Xiao and William Hu were stopped as they tried to leave Tonga at Fua'amotu International Airport on Monday with the forged documents.

The Crown claims the passports were forged because the two accused have allegedly never been nationalised as Tongan citizens.

FBI probes US-Tongan company involving alleged immigration scam, Tongan victims speak out

No arrest has been made although FBI has seized computers and documents from the company’s office in Sacramento, California.

The company claimed it has agents in the South Pacific including Tonga and Fiji.

Tongan mother’s suspicious death in Vanuatu rocks family, Tongan community

Annie Joseph who was also known by the name ‘Ani Tangi, a mother of five in her early 30s, died on Thursday, January 7, in a local hospital after she allegedly collapsed in her home.

The Vanuatu Daily Post reported that she was rushed to hospital with injuries from what it described as “suspected domestic violence.”

Sitanilei Tuʻihalangingie was allegedly killed after he fell through a pond ice in Reno.

Reno Police have quoted an eye witness telling rescue crews Tuʻihalangingie was wearing heavy clothing and immediately sank underneath.
