School programme needed for overseas born Tongans - report

The report was submitted to parliament by La Trobe University's Helen Lee.

Professor Lee says overseas Tongans often struggle culturally, are sometimes ridiculed and encounter violence more frequently than they might at home.

Tonga looks forward to a new domestic wharf

This is part of the assistance of the Government of Japan to the people of Tonga through the bilateral relations.

Government officials including the CEO for Infrastructure and the Minister for Public Enterprises were in Japan last month to exchange signatory with the construction group that will be working on building the new wharf for Tonga.

Tonga keen on loan guarantee scheme used by Fiji and Samoa

The Governor of the Bank, Dr Ngongo Kioa said the loan scheme will enable government to save between $5 to $10 million pa’anga annually. 

The funds will be used as securities for small medium enterprises loan. 

This, Dr Kioa said, is an incentive to encourage small business enterprises to enhance their business opportunities.

The funds will not be given directly to the small business; however it will be managed by a separate financial unit. 

Tributes flow for Fuʻamotu father killed by teen

36-year-old Lipine Fakatene was allegedly stabbed to death at the scene before he was taken to hospital.

A teen age boy, 19, has been charged with murder in connection to Fakatene’s death.

Police told Kaniva News the incident was linked to “youth fight” that has been in the village for some time.

New Zealand beat Tonga 13-0 to top Group A and advance to the semi-finals

Hannah Blake opened the scoring for New Zealand in the 5th minute. The second goal came when Maggie Jenkins broke through the Tonga defence and scored.

Jenkins went on to score a hat trick in the first half. Blake scored another and the other goals came from Samantha Tawhuru and Emma main to take New Zealand a 9-0 lead in the first half.

Supreme Court rules Tapueluelu’s dismissal unlawful, orders compensation by government

Lord Chief Justice Owen Paulsen ruled on November 24, 2015 that the government must compensate Mr Tapueluelu (who is referred to in the court documents as Palu) for damages caused by his wrongful dismissal and loss of salary from October 11, 2001 to December 8, 2002.

Cyclone Victor changing course

The system, which has sustained winds of 150 kilometres an hour at its centre, has moved south between Niue and the Cook Islands but is now turning westward.

On its current trajectory, the cyclone is expected to pass about 300 south of Niue and be within about 400 kilometres of Tonga's main island by Friday.
