Marist beat Spartan to win Lavengamālie Cup

Marist were awarded the cup and Division One top prize money of TP$35,000 while Spartan took home TP$20,000 in prize money from the tournament.

Nukunuku rugby team took the Division 2 prize of TP$12,000 on Friday, in the finals of the Lavengamalie Cup Tournament 2015-16 at Teufaiva Stadium in Nuku’alofa, scoring 43-7 against ‘Ahiohio team of Malapo.

     

Tongan teen dies after falling through ice pond in Reno

The victim was 19-year-old Sitanilei Tu’ihalangingie from Kolomotu’a and Fātumu in Tonga but was residing in Reno, a family member who did not want to be identified told Kaniva News.

According to Police Tuʻihalangingie was pulled from the ice and taken by ambulance to hospital where he later died.

Fa'anunu pleaded not guilty for alleged murder of his wife

Hauati Fa’anunu, 41, also known to friends as “Howard,” entered a not guilty plea at his court arraignment to one count of first-degree murder in the deadly shooting of his wife, Mary Fa’anunu 34. The suspect was also charged with six counts of child endangerment because his children were home at the time of the shooting, according to the prosecution.

Tongan Police seize former Prime Minister’s computer over passport investigation

Radio Tonga alleged the seizure was linked to the investigation over Tonga’s passport scandal but no arrests have been made.

Tonga’s Minister of Police Hon Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa told us he did not know about the “details” of the confiscation.

No by-election until appeal court decides on Tapueluelu’s appeal, says Chief Clerk

Pōle’o told Kanva News this morning the Speaker of the House, Lord Tuʻivakanō and the Electoral Commissioner Pita Vuki had made the decision in a meeting they held yesterday.

Pōleʻo said the by-election for Tongatapu 4 will possibly be held in May if the Court of Appeal will rule against Tapueluelu’s appeal.

Man dies after mistakenly drinking toxic chemical in Tonga

The man was hospitalised for about a week at Vaiola Hospital in Nuku'alofa before he died.

A medical officer said the toxic chemical was classified under weed killers and it is highly toxic if consumed by human being.

Christian churches are holding services throughout the week and are calling on their members to use the week in giving themselves back to God’s service.

The week is an important one for Tonga, which is one of the most religious countries in the world.

Reigning Lavengamalie Cup champions bundled out in semi-final

Toloa tried their best to put on a strong performance at Teufaiva Park in Nuku’alofa yesterday afternoon.

However, Marist was determined to avenge their loss to Toloa in pool play and did just that.

Marist Team Manager Tafu Wolfgram admitted it was not easy beating Toloa.

 “It was a tough game but the players just stuck it out and played to what we had planned.”

The semi-finals for the premier division have ended and the winning teams will now progress to the finals at Teufaiva Park on Saturday.

Marist will face-off with Spartans.
